Ringgold, GA – Ooltewah, TN driver “The Hustler” Riley Hickman used a late race charge and pass to overtake race long leader Jeff Smith to pick up his first win of the 2017 season with the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series during the series’ first ever visit to Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, GA.

Twenty-five entrants signed in for action at the historic speedway that straddles the Georgia and Tennessee state line just outside of Chattanooga. Race #1 winner Cory Hedgecock would set fast time and pick up the “Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Fast Time Award” and $100 to put his Valley Transport/Transport One/Cushman sponsored Rocket Chassis on the pole for the 50-lap main event.

Villanow, GA driver Jeff Smith made his return to action with the Chevy Super Series driving the Richard Austin owned #A19. Smith has turned many laps around Boyd’s Speedway and after recovering from a serious neck injury that sidelined him from racing, his return was well received and he made a statement by putting his car on the outside front row for the start of the feature event.

Hedgecock and Smith would lead the field to green flag with Smith using his outside lane starting position to secure the lead heading into turn 1. Hedgecock would stay on the back bumper of Smith as the field raced fiercely behind them two and three wide for most positions inside the top 10. With an extended green flag period Smith and Hedgecock began to lapped traffic and each had to make sure that they chose the right line to make the pass as quickly as possible.

With Smith and Hedgecock battling for the top spot, the racing behind them had picked up as Ryan King of Seymour, TN had moved from his 10th starting spot in the Warrior Race Cars/Brian King Roofing Comanche chassis to 5th where he would battle with Cruise with the Champions Rookie of the Year point leader Devin Dixon, Cartersville, GA’s Rodney Martin, Rome, GA’s Austin Smith, and eventual leader Hickman.

Caution would appear on lap 33 for contact between the 03 of Oliver Gentry and the 29 of Buddy George. The field stacked up for the double file restart with 17 laps to go. Smith again charged to the lead with Hedgecock and Hickman stalking. Out front as Smith again worked lap cars to put them between himself and Hedgecock, sparks flew from under the rear of Hedgecock’s car. Heading out of turn 2, the Loudon, TN driver would slow and pull into the infield with rear end troubles on lap 38.

Smith, utilizing the extreme low line just around the uke tires in the infield, appeared to be on cruise control out front. Hickman’s “American Billet/Hickman Manufacturing” sponsored CVR Race Car found a middle groove to the speedway that appeared to suit man and machine well as he began to reel in Smith as the laps wound down. As the field completed lap 45 Hickman was on the deck of Smith’s A19 at the start finish line. Each driver dedicating themselves to their respective “lines” on the speedway, Hickman pulled alongside Smith down the back stretch and secured the lead out of turn 4 to lead the remainder of the race flashing under the Sunoco Race Fuels checkered flag 2.208 seconds ahead of Smith.

The Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series next event will be Saturday April 29th at Chris Martin’s Cochran Motor Speedway in Cochran, Georgia. The event will be a 50-lap, $3,000 to win. For more information please visit Cochran Motor Speedway’s official internet home at
